While the region’s M&A activity recorded its lowest annual deal volume since 2015, the private equity industry remained resilient during the global pandemic, matching last year’s volume and slightly exceeding the overall 2019 buyout value.

Key Data Points [Overview]:

  • Activity in the region was subdued at the start of the year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with 127 deals worth USD 17.3bn recorded in 1Q20, but gradually recovered throughout the year, with 158 deals valued at USD 36.3bn in 4Q20.
  • The year saw 564 buyouts with overall disclosed value of USD 119.3bn, an 8.1% increase in value compared to last year’s figure (USD 110.4bn across 582 deals).
  • Annual Exit figures stand at 172 deals worth USD 24.5bn, half the value of last year’s overall value and a 22.5% decline in volume (222 deals, USD 60.8bn in 2019).
