October 2020 saw the Nordic M&A community gather together for Mergermarket’s annual conference exploring the key trends in transactions in the Nordic region.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a series of panels explored the impact of the pandemic and associated recession on many aspects of M&A.
The first panel saw a group of experts including Jan Lund from the Bonnier Group, Nets Group’s Dorthe Rosenkilde Saunders, Fredrik vom Hofe of the IFS and PwC’s Thomas Fossum exploring portfolio strategies in a global economic slowdown. One of the key themes from the panel was the surprising amount of recent deal activity, and what was driving that, with detailed discussions on thriving sectors like technology and media. But even in more impacted sectors structural changes were said to be driving deals, with Fossum noting that many companies had been forced to acquire parts of their value chain, whether supplies or distributors. He noted that “This is one of the most significant changes to the market.” A second notable topic was about challenges in managing companies in the pandemic, including a growth in carve-outs to fund new projects like digitization.
Other panels explored the changing role of private equity, infrastructure and digitising healthcare, and featured alongside a variety of presentations and interviews, including a keynote presentation by Cecilia Malmström, European Union Commissioner for Trade from 2014 to 2019.
