Resurgent private equity drives European buyout financing: 2020 Review

The latest report from Debtwire Par and Mergermarket reviews the key trends from LBO financing in Western European markets from 2020.

Private equity ended 2020 with a flourish of dealmaking, recording 301 buyouts valued at €41.2bn in Q4 alone - the second most active quarter by volume on record.

This helped to drive European buyouts towards their highest annual value since 2007. Financial sponsors recorded annual buyout value of €126.7bn for 2020, up 7.8% from the previous year.

In European loan markets, the number of loan deals fell sharply in 2Q20 as the impact of COVID-19 reverberated through the market. The latest data shows the full extent of the rebound in the second half of the year as buyout activity increased from its 2Q20 low and lender appetite picked up.

The latest report from Debtwire Par and Mergermarket contains further datapoints and analysis from 2020, including leverage ratios, loan and bond market activity, sector analysis, secondary market pricing and league tables.
